What is Cooling Tower Water Treatment?

Cooling tower water treatment generally consists of a series of processes that take in water streams and produce water that is adequate for cooling tower operations and for the regulatory requirements for water discharge. It is often needed at power plants, chemical plants, data centers and industrial processes. Treatment is applied to feed water to convert it to make-up quality water for example by filtering and softening river water. It is done on the recirculating water to maintain a certain chemistry and prevent build-up of undesirable species, for example bacteria. Treatment is also performed on blowdown to meet discharge requirements for example through reverse osmosis or ion exchange. In all of these cases, treatment consists of mechanical and chemical processes that come at a cost and that are often weighed against future maintenance costs on the cooling tower and potential plant shutdown.
